The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 campaign council, describing it as a “rehabilitation centre for corruption suspects.”
The party made the allegation in a statement issued on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, questioning the inclusion of some former government officials in the campaign structure.
The ADC said the composition of the council raised concerns about the Federal Government’s handling of corruption allegations involving politically exposed persons.
The opposition party specifically questioned the inclusion of former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu, and former Chairman of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, Ngozi Olejeme, in the campaign council.
Edu was suspended by President Tinubu in January 2024 amid controversy surrounding an attempted transfer of N585 million from the account of the National Social Investment Programme Agency into a private account.
Olejeme, meanwhile, has faced prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged financial offences.
The ADC challenged the Federal Government to clarify the status of the cases involving the two former officials and others associated with the campaign council.
“The Campaign Council is full of corruption suspects. If they have been cleared, the government should show how and when and by whom they were cleared,” the party said.
The opposition party’s criticism comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with Tinubu seeking another term in office.
