Kuwait’s state television on Saturday, has announced that Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the crown prince, has been named the new emir of the oil-rich country following the death of his predecessor, Sheikh Nawaf.
“Kuwait’s cabinet names crown prince, his highness Sheikh Meshal… emir of the state of Kuwait,” the broadcaster said.
The official statement from the royal court confirmed the passing of Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, on Saturday, aged 86, after a three-year tenure marked by recurring political disputes.
“With great sadness and sorrow, we mourn… the death of Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Emir of the State of Kuwait,” said a statement aired on state television.
The transition was formalized by Kuwait’s cabinet, designating Sheikh Meshal as the new leader.
Concerns about Sheikh Nawaf’s health had surfaced in November when he was hospitalized for an emergency health issue, but details of his illness were not disclosed.
Sheikh Nawaf had assumed the role of emir in September 2020, succeeding his half-brother Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who had appointed him as crown prince in 2006.
