Senator Ndume Criticizes Nigeria’s Economic Crisis, Calls for Focus on Agriculture

Senator Ali Ndume has strongly criticized Nigeria’s current economic situation, pointing out the widening gap between the country’s minimum wage and the rising costs of essential goods. Speaking in Borno South, Ndume emphasized that the N70,000 minimum wage is insufficient to meet basic needs, particularly as food prices continue to surge.

“The minimum wage of N70,000 can no longer afford a 50kg bag of rice, which now costs over N100,000, nor can it cover the price of a 100kg bag of beans, which is being sold for N200,000,” Ndume stated, calling this situation unacceptable. He urged the government to take more decisive action to address the growing economic hardship faced by Nigerians.

Ndume’s remarks come amidst increasing concerns over inflation, food insecurity, and the rising cost of living. He also highlighted the sharp rise in fuel prices, with a litre now costing between N970 and N1,200 in some regions, up from around N200.

The senator called for urgent reforms, acknowledging the good intentions behind the current government’s economic policies but emphasizing the need for these policies to better address the everyday struggles of Nigerians. He advocated for a renewed focus on agriculture as a sustainable solution to the food crisis, encouraging the youth to pursue farming and other productive ventures.

Ndume also expressed concerns about President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms, urging traditional leaders in his constituency to reject them. He argued that these new tax policies would only deepen the suffering of the people and that a greater emphasis on boosting local food production and investing in agriculture is key to overcoming Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges.

“The only way out of this crisis is to focus on agriculture. We need to encourage local production and reduce our reliance on imports,” Ndume concluded.
