The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won all chairmanship and councillorship seats in Osun State’s 30 local government areas (LGAs), despite warnings from the police and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) to suspend the election.
Announcing the results on Saturday, Hashim Abioye, Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), said the election proceeded based on a ruling by the Osun State High Court in Ilesa, which mandated filling the vacant LGA positions.
Governor Ademola Adeleke, who cast his vote in Ede North LGA, described the election as peaceful. “The process has been very peaceful. I urge my good people of Osun State to ensure there is no violence because Osun State is a peaceful state,” he said.
However, the election faced significant controversy. The police sealed OSSIEC’s headquarters in Osogbo and arrested some officials, forcing the commission to relocate to an undisclosed location to conduct the election.
The police had earlier cited security threats and claimed “credible intelligence” indicated a high risk of violence. AGF Lateef Fagbemi also opposed the election, referencing a February 10, 2025, Court of Appeal ruling in Akure, which nullified a prior Federal High Court judgment that had removed All Progressives Congress (APC) local council chairmen in 2022. According to Fagbemi, the ruling effectively reinstated the former APC chairmen, making the election unnecessary.
Tensions between PDP and APC had escalated in the days leading up to the poll, resulting in violent clashes that left at least six people dead. Governor Adeleke accused APC members, allegedly backed by security agencies, of attempting to forcibly seize local government secretariats. He also called on President Bola Tinubu to caution his minister, Gboyega Oyetola, to prevent further violence. However, the crisis persisted despite these warnings.
