The New York Knicks ended a 53-year championship drought on Saturday night, defeating the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals to capture their first NBA title since 1973.
The historic victory sparked celebrations across New York City, with fans gathering in bars, outdoor watch parties, and public viewing areas to witness the long-awaited triumph.
Knicks star guard Jalen Brunson delivered a sensational performance, scoring 45 points to cap off an outstanding postseason campaign. Brunson’s leadership throughout the playoffs earned him NBA Finals MVP honors.
“I don’t know what I’m feeling. I’m in awe,” Brunson told ESPN’s Lisa Salters after the game. “Whenever anyone counted us out, we found a way to respond.”
Brunson was joined during the trophy presentation by his father, Rick Brunson, who serves as an assistant coach for the Knicks.
“It’s everything I’ve dreamed of. That’s why I came to New York,” Brunson said.
Back in Manhattan, jubilant fans flooded the streets as the final moments of the championship-clinching victory played out on giant screens. Thousands gathered outside Madison Square Garden, cheering and celebrating the franchise’s return to the top of the NBA.
However, the celebrations were marred by isolated incidents overnight. The New York Police Department said a 17-year-old was shot in the foot near West 42nd Street and Broadway. The teenager was transported to Bellevue Hospital and was reported to be in stable condition. Police said three persons of interest were taken into custody and a firearm was recovered at the scene. No motive or charges had been announced as of Sunday morning.
Meanwhile, the Fire Department of New York responded to a school bus fire near the intersection of West 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue, just a block from Times Square. Officials said the call was received around 2:47 a.m., and firefighters worked through the early hours of Sunday to bring the blaze under control.
Despite the incidents, the night will be remembered as one of the most significant in New York sports history, as the Knicks finally reclaimed NBA glory after more than five decades of waiting.
