Mr. Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the September 21, 2024, Edo State governorship election, has vowed to challenge the judgment of the Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal at the Court of Appeal.
The tribunal, sitting in Abuja on Wednesday, upheld Governor Monday Okpebholo’s victory and dismissed the petitions filed by the PDP and Ighodalo contesting the election results.
In a statement issued in Benin, Ighodalo reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing justice, stating that his appeal is aimed at protecting the collective rights of Edo people and ensuring credible elections.
“While we may not all agree with the verdict, we remain steadfast in our belief that the rule of law must continue as democracy’s foundational bedrock. Our pursuit of justice affirms our firm belief that Edo people’s right to freely choose their leaders through credible, free, and fair elections must always prevail,” he said.
He assured his supporters that this was not the end of their journey but the beginning of a greater struggle for justice and democracy.
Ighodalo commended Edo citizens for their support and instructed his legal team to proceed to the Court of Appeal.
“This is not about me or any single individual; it is about democracy’s essence, our collective right to determine our future, and our legacy for generations unborn. We remain resolute, committed, and unwavering in our pursuit of truth and justice,” he stated.
He urged Edo residents to remain peaceful, calm, and law-abiding as the legal process continues.
