The Crown Prosecution Service announced Tuesday that 24-year-old British-Iranian dual national Mohmed Abdulkarim and 24-year-old British citizen Nouman Essghir had been charged under the United Kingdom’s National Security Act.
The charges relate to an incident in September at RAF Fairford, located in Gloucestershire, a strategically important military installation that has been used by American bombers during operations against Iran this year.
According to British prosecutors, Abdulkarim has been charged with assisting Iran’s intelligence service.
Essghir faces a separate charge of entering a prohibited location for a purpose considered prejudicial to the United Kingdom.
Both men are expected to appear in court later Tuesday.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about the September incident or the specific activities that led to the charges.
The allegations have not been proven in court.
RAF Fairford is a British military airbase that supports operations involving United States military aircraft, including long-range bombers.
The facility has played a role in American military operations this year, with U.S. bombers using the base to conduct strikes against Iran.
Its involvement in those operations has placed the installation within the broader context of heightened security concerns surrounding tensions between Iran and Western governments.
The charges come as British authorities continue to address potential threats involving sensitive military facilities and alleged foreign intelligence activities.
The case will now move into the British judicial system, where prosecutors will be required to establish the allegations against the two defendants.
Further details about the incident and the evidence supporting the charges may emerge during court proceedings.
For now, the Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed that both men face charges under national security legislation, with their initial court appearance scheduled for Tuesday.
