Obi Raises Alarm Over Democracy, Calls for NDC Mobiliser’s Release

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on President Bola Tinubu to stop what he described as the destruction of Nigeria’s democracy, while demanding the immediate release of NDC political mobiliser Rilwan Olawale.

Obi made the call in a post on his verified X handle on Monday, following reports that Olawale had been arrested at his residence in Lagos.

The former Anambra State governor condemned the reported arrest, describing it as an attack on democracy and opposition voices.

“Stop destroying the democracy that made you. President Tinubu has remained a huge beneficiary of our democracy and should not brazenly be destroying it by encouraging and facilitating violence,” Obi wrote on his X handle.

He criticised the alleged use of security agencies to harass and intimidate political opponents, warning that such actions could undermine democratic principles.

Obi further cautioned that encouraging political thuggery and violence would set Nigeria’s democracy backwards.

He added that continued arrests of political opponents could endanger the country’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
