Country music icon Dolly Parton, whose decades-long career made her one of the most celebrated entertainers in American music, has died at the age of 80.

Parton died peacefully Tuesday in Nashville, according to her publicist. A subsequent statement said she died at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones following a brief battle with cancer.

A small private service will be held for immediate family members.

Beyond her chart-topping songs and distinctive voice, Parton built a remarkable career spanning music, film, television, business and philanthropy. She was also closely associated with Dollywood, her popular theme park in Tennessee.

Concerns about the singer’s health had grown over the past year. In September 2025, Parton told fans that she was experiencing health challenges and needed to undergo several medical procedures, although she did not disclose the nature of her condition.

Nearly six months later, during the seasonal opening of Dollywood, she said she was still recovering from what she described as “a few little health issues.”

Parton had also been grieving the death of her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, who died in March 2025. She said the loss had led her to take time to rebuild herself “spiritually, emotionally and physically.”

Just 10 days before her death, Parton canceled a scheduled appearance celebrating the opening of a new Dollywood attraction after her doctor advised her not to travel.

In a video message played at the park, she told fans that she had occasionally been experiencing dizziness and dehydration as she continued dealing with health problems.

Parton leaves behind a towering legacy in country music as well as decades of charitable work and business ventures that expanded her influence far beyond the entertainment industry.
