NUT Begins Indefinite Strike Over School Abductions

The Nigeria Union of Teachers has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to begin an indefinite strike from Monday, June 1, 2026, following the continued abduction of teachers and pupils in the state.

The union said the action was necessary to pressure authorities into intensifying efforts to secure the safe release of the victims, whose whereabouts remain unknown.

In a statement signed by the Oyo State NUT Chairman, Hassan Fatai, and Secretary, Salami Olukayode, the union said the prolonged captivity of the abducted teachers and learners had created fear and anxiety among education workers while weakening public confidence in the school system.

The strike follows the May 15 attack by gunmen on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Community Grammar School, and L.A Primary School in Oriire Local Government Area, where several teachers, pupils and students were kidnapped.

According to the union, 39 students and seven teachers, including Community High School principal Mrs. Rachael Alamu, were abducted, while two teachers were reportedly killed during the attacks.

NUT National President Audu Amba confirmed the directive, stating that teachers in Oyo State had been instructed to withdraw their services indefinitely until the victims regain freedom.

A national circular signed by Amba and Secretary General Clinton Ikpitibo also directed all state chapters of the union to organise solidarity rallies on June 2 across state capitals to demand urgent government intervention and safer learning environments nationwide.

The union said repeated appeals to security agencies and government authorities had yet to produce results, leaving families and school communities in distress.
