The United States military has launched a new round of strikes against Iran, saying the operation was intended to “swiftly punish” the country’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) following an attack that killed two U.S. service members and left another missing.
The latest operation marked the eighth consecutive night of U.S. military strikes on Iranian targets.
Iranian media reported on Sunday that areas near Sirik in Hormozgan province, Qeshm Island, and a location near Shadegan in Khuzestan province were struck during the overnight attacks.
There were no immediate reports of casualties from the Iranian strikes.
In a statement posted on social media, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operation was designed to further weaken Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. military also said the strikes were carried out in retaliation for Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks on a U.S. military base in Jordan on Friday that killed two American service members. Four additional personnel were hospitalized following the attack.
CENTCOM later said the targets included Iranian coastal surveillance systems, air defense installations, maritime assets, and facilities used to store missiles and drones.
The latest exchange comes amid an escalating conflict that has continued since the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran in late February.
According to U.S. figures, 16 American service members have been killed and more than 430 wounded since the conflict began.
Meanwhile, Iranian state-affiliated Tasnim News Agency reported that Iran launched retaliatory strikes against U.S. military facilities in Kuwait.
According to a statement attributed to Iran’s military, the attacks targeted what it described as a U.S. ammunition depot at Al-Adiri Camp, as well as Patriot radar and air defense radar systems at Ali Al Salem Air Base.
Iran said the strikes were carried out “in response to the repeated aggressions of the enemy.”
The latest exchanges underscore the continuing escalation between Washington and Tehran, raising concerns that the conflict could broaden further across the Middle East and place additional pressure on regional security and global shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
