Federal agents conducted searches Friday morning at the Maryland home and Washington, D.C. office of former National Security Adviser John Bolton as part of an investigation into allegations that he may have improperly retained classified materials, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The operation, carried out by the FBI, began around 7 a.m. and involved several federal agents and at least six FBI vehicles at the scene. Local authorities temporarily blocked access to the street surrounding Bolton’s residence in Montgomery County while the search was underway.

Agents were seen entering and exiting the property, removing boxes and loading them into government vehicles. The search lasted for over an hour, though no details have yet been released regarding the specific nature or contents of the materials being sought.

While federal authorities have not disclosed the exact allegations, the investigation centers on the possible unauthorized possession of sensitive government documents. It remains unclear what specific records are involved.

FBI Director Kash Patel addressed the development in a post on social media, stating, “No one is above the law… FBI agents on mission.” The message underscored the seriousness of the operation without offering further details.

Attorney General Pam Bondi also commented, affirming the Justice Department’s commitment to pursuing legal action where appropriate. “America’s safety isn’t negotiable,” she said. “Justice will be pursued. Always.”

President Donald Trump, speaking to reporters later in the day, said he was not aware of the search in advance. “They’ll probably brief me later today, but I don’t want to know the details,” he said. When asked whether he supported the investigation, Trump replied, “You have to do what you have to do.”

Bolton, a long-time critic of Trump’s foreign policy, particularly his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, has often drawn the ire of the president. His involvement in several high-profile disputes, including his opposition to Trump’s stance on NATO and Russia, has kept him in the political spotlight.

This investigation adds to a growing list of cases where former officials are being scrutinized for the handling of classified materials. Legal experts note that such cases carry serious consequences if violations are confirmed.

As of now, no charges have been filed, and Bolton has not issued a public statement regarding the search.
