Barcelona’s head coach, Xavi Hernandez, revealed his decision to step down from his position at the end of the current season following his team’s 5-3 defeat to Villarreal in La Liga on Saturday.
In a press conference, Xavi conveyed, “On June 30, I will leave the club. It’s a decision I have taken with the president, with the staff.”
The reigning champions, currently occupying third place in the league standings, find themselves trailing leaders Real Madrid by a substantial 10 points, effectively dashing their hopes of retaining the title.
Citing recent setbacks including elimination from the Copa del Rey by Athletic Bilbao and a resounding defeat to Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final, Xavi emphasized his decision was motivated by the club’s welfare and the players’ interests.
“I’ve thought about the club… and above all the players,” stated Xavi. “I have the feeling that I am doing the right thing, that I am acting with common sense. I think the club needs a change of dynamics; the dynamic is very negative.”
Appointed in November 2021, Xavi guided Barcelona to success last season, securing the Spanish Super Cup and league title with a robust defensive strategy.
However, this season has seen a decline in defensive stability, exemplified by Saturday’s unprecedented five-goal concession in La Liga at home for the first time since 1963.
Xavi affirmed that not even a Champions League victory would alter his decision to depart, underscoring his commitment to fostering a positive transition for the club.
Despite the challenges, Xavi expressed optimism about Barcelona’s prospects for the remainder of the season, asserting, “I am more optimistic than ever with this change of dynamic… we’ll go for La Liga, it’s very difficult but we will fight.”
Acknowledging the impact of his decision on the players, Xavi pledged to address the team directly, highlighting the importance of transparency and communication in navigating the transition period.
