U.S. Airstrike in Iraq Kills ISIS Global Operations Chief Abu Khadijah

A U.S. airstrike in western Iraq on Thursday eliminated ISIS’ second-in-command and chief of global operations, Abdallah Makki Muslih al-Rifai, also known as “Abu Khadijah,” along with another ISIS operative, U.S. officials confirmed.

The precision strike, carried out by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) in coordination with Iraqi Intelligence and Security Forces, targeted Abu Khadijah in Al Anbar Province, Iraq, according to a CENTCOM statement.

“As the Emir of ISIS’ most senior decision-making body, Abu Khadijah was responsible for the group’s global operations, logistics, and strategic planning, as well as directing a significant portion of ISIS’ financial network,” U.S. officials stated.

Following the strike, CENTCOM and Iraqi forces secured the site and discovered the bodies of both operatives. Both were reportedly wearing unexploded “suicide vests” and were armed at the time of the attack.

Officials confirmed Abu Khadijah’s identity through DNA analysis, matching samples collected from a previous raid in which he had narrowly escaped.

“Abu Khadijah was one of the most significant ISIS figures in the group’s global network,” said Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, commander of U.S. Central Command. “We will continue to eliminate terrorists and dismantle organizations that threaten the U.S. homeland, our allies, and our partners in the region and beyond.”
