Trump and Musk Question U.S. Gold Reserves at Fort Knox, Demand Inspection

President Donald Trump is raising doubts—without providing evidence—about whether the U.S. gold reserves at Fort Knox still exist in full, even suggesting that it may have been stolen.

Trump has now expressed interest in visiting Fort Knox personally to verify the reserves, echoing Elon Musk, who has repeatedly cast suspicion on the whereabouts of the nation’s gold supply.

The United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox, Kentucky, is one of the most secure facilities in the country, housing approximately 147.3 million ounces of gold, according to the U.S. Mint.

Despite Trump and Musk’s skepticism, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has affirmed that regular audits confirm all gold is accounted for. Trump’s former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin also personally inspected the reserves during his first term and confirmed their existence.

Musk reignited the controversy during his appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast Friday—one of his first major interviews since becoming a “special government employee” under Trump’s administration.

“A live tour of Fort Knox would be awesome … is the gold there or not? They say it is—is it real? Or did somebody spray paint some lead?” Musk speculated.

His comments follow a February 15 post on X, where he reacted to a request to investigate the gold supply, initially responding: “Surely it’s reviewed at least every year?”

Trump referenced the gold reserves last week while discussing Musk’s latest Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) efforts.

“We have found hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud so far. And we’ve just started. We’re actually going to Fort Knox to see if the gold is there because maybe somebody stole the gold. Tons of gold,” Trump declared.

Fort Knox, a high-security military installation, has stored U.S. gold reserves since 1937, according to the U.S. Army. While the facility has been the subject of conspiracy theories for decades, official audits have consistently confirmed the gold’s presence.

However, with Trump and Musk now pushing for a direct inspection, the mystery surrounding Fort Knox is once again making headlines—whether driven by genuine concern or political spectacle remains to be seen.
