Trump Administration’s Mass Deportation Plan Hinges on Congressional Funding, Says Border Czar

The Trump administration’s goal of removing undocumented migrants from the United States is limited by financial constraints and will rely heavily on funding from Congress, according to the administration’s newly appointed “border czar,” Tom Homan.

Speaking to ABC News’ This Week co-anchor Martha Raddatz, Homan acknowledged the challenges of executing the administration’s promised mass deportation plan. “I’m being realistic,” Homan said. “We can do what we can with the money we have. The more funding we receive, the more we can accomplish.”

Homan explained that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) currently lacks sufficient congressional funding to detain all undocumented immigrants the administration aims to arrest. “The more money, the better I’m going to do,” he stated, emphasizing that the success of the plan depends on financial resources allocated by Congress.

The primary focus of enforcement operations, according to Homan, will be removing individuals deemed public safety or national security threats. “Take as many public safety threats off the street as possible,” he said, adding that this includes deporting gang members, such as those associated with the Venezuelan cartel Tren de Agua.

“Success is when the crime rate associated with illegal aliens goes down,” Homan said. “Every public safety threat and national security risk we remove from this country is a win.”

Homan also highlighted a significant development in deportation efforts: the use of U.S. military aircraft to transport migrants. For the first time, military planes were deployed on Thursday to fly more than 150 migrants to Guatemala on two separate flights, a practice that will now occur daily, according to U.S. officials.

The administration’s strategy underscores the logistical and financial hurdles of its immigration enforcement goals, while sparking debates over the role of federal funding in addressing undocumented migration.
