President Bola Tinubu has launched the National Greenhouse Gas Emission Monitoring Programme (NGHGEMP) in collaboration with Netzence Sustainability Limited, marking a significant step towards a cleaner and more sustainable ecosystem in Nigeria.
Speaking at the 2025 Environmental Health Excellence Awards Ceremony in Abuja, Tinubu—represented by Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF)—reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to environmental protection, climate action, and public health.
“This event is not just a recognition of individual excellence but a testament to our collective resolve to forge a Nigeria where clean air, safe water, and sustainable practices are the birthright of every citizen,” he stated.
The President highlighted key environmental policies aimed at tackling pollution, waste management, and sanitation, including:
- National Environmental Health Regulation 2024 – a framework to address pollution and waste management.
- Greenhouse Gas Emission Register – a data-driven tool to monitor and reduce carbon emissions.
- Carbon Analysis Framework – a roadmap for industries to transition to renewable energy.
- Carbon Print Certificate – a national standard recognizing eco-conscious businesses and communities.
He stressed the importance of collaborations across all sectors, urging farmers, businesses, and individuals to adopt sustainable practices.
Following the ceremony, Dr. Sadiq Sani, Founder and CEO of Netzence Sustainability Limited, praised the government’s efforts, stating that his company has developed a real-time carbon emission tracking technology to enhance environmental sustainability.
“Our technology is designed to contribute to a cleaner environment. The more carbon we remove, the better our environmental health,” Sani said.
He noted that air pollution monitoring and air quality improvement remain key priorities, adding that his company is working with the Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHCON) and the federal government to enhance expertise and solutions.
Despite funding challenges, Sani expressed optimism about raising environmental awareness and leveraging technology to mitigate climate risks.
“If we reduce air pollution, we improve health conditions and lower disease rates. Our goal is to support government efforts and make Nigeria’s environment safer for all,” he added.
Also speaking at the event, Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas, commended President Tinubu for his progressive environmental policies, emphasizing the need to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability.
He announced plans to recognize individuals and organizations dedicated to environmental protection before the end of the year.
“The President has achieved a crucial balance between economic development and environmental protection, which is vital for the well-being of present and future generations,” Abbas said.
With the NGHGEMP initiative and strong public-private sector collaboration, Nigeria is taking a decisive step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, and advancing environmental health policies for a more sustainable future.
