Tinubu Defends Fuel Subsidy Removal as Necessary for Nigeria’s Future

President Bola Tinubu has defended his administration’s decision to remove the fuel subsidy, describing it as a “necessary” step to secure Nigeria’s future.

The subsidy removal, announced during Tinubu’s swearing-in ceremony in May 2023, led to a significant increase in fuel prices, sparking widespread protests and criticism over the resulting hardship for citizens.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting during his visit to Enugu State on Saturday, Tinubu justified the decision, emphasizing its long-term benefits.

“You are all members of one big family called Nigeria, living in different rooms of the same house. This house must be built to satisfy our immediate needs and for tomorrow too. That is why the removal of the fuel subsidy was necessary,” Tinubu said.

He argued that sustaining the subsidy would have jeopardized the future of unborn generations.

“You cannot spend the future of generations yet unborn in advance. Don’t bankrupt the nation before they are born. I know people will fight, grumble, and abuse me, but I asked for this job. I know what it takes. I believe in myself and in gathering a strong team to build a nation,” Tinubu added.

The president also urged Nigerians to show love for their country and reject negative narratives.

“It is our country. We have to work really hard for it; to build a nation we can be proud of. Change the narrative. Negative comments about Nigeria? I’m not taking that! I’m very proud of Nigeria, and you all should be proud too,” he said.
