Shekarau Denies Rift With Kwankwaso, Blames APC for Past Political Rift

Former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has dismissed claims of animosity between him and his political counterpart, Rabiu Kwankwaso, clarifying that neither of them was responsible for their past political differences.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, Shekarau explained that their diverging political paths were shaped by circumstances beyond their control. He also stated that he had no objections to engaging in discussions with Kwankwaso if the need arose.

According to Shekarau, the perceived rift between them stemmed from the failure of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to ensure fairness in its party structure. He accused former President Muhammadu Buhari, President Bola Tinubu, and APC chieftain Bisi Akande of contributing to the party’s internal conflicts.

He recalled that tensions escalated when Kwankwaso and governors from Adamawa, Rivers, and Sokoto states defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. The dispute, he said, was particularly fueled by the unfair distribution of party leadership positions in Kano.

“In Kano, the ANPP made up 80 percent of the APC structure, yet because he was a sitting governor, they allocated him 60 percent of the party leadership, which we questioned as an injustice,” Shekarau stated.

Rejecting what he viewed as favoritism, Shekarau and his supporters refused to accept the arrangement.

“It doesn’t work like that. That’s why we refused to be part of such injustice,” he added.

Despite their past political disagreements, Shekarau signaled a willingness to move forward, leaving the door open for possible reconciliation with Kwankwaso.
