The Nigerian Senate has called on the Federal Government to immortalize the late leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Edwin Clark, by naming a national monument after him.
The lawmakers made this appeal during the plenary session on Wednesday, February 19, at the National Assembly complex, highlighting Clark’s legacy as a former federal commissioner for Information and a strong advocate for minority rights.
Clark’s family had earlier announced his passing in Abuja on February 17 at the age of 97. In honor of his contributions, the Senate observed a one-minute silence and resolved to send a delegation to offer condolences to his family and attend his funeral.
The motion, sponsored by Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas (APC-Delta South) and 16 others, recognized Clark’s unwavering advocacy for the Niger Delta and his remarkable influence on Nigerian politics.
“Pa Edwin Clark was a nationalist, a renowned lawyer, a seasoned administrator, a philanthropist, and an astute advocate for the Niger Delta region,” Thomas stated.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio also praised Clark’s efforts in fostering unity among Nigeria’s diverse regions, emphasizing his role in shaping the country’s political landscape.
