Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi Urges Caution on Chinese Deals, Warns of Sovereign Risk

Renowned political scientist, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to exercise caution when entering agreements with China, especially regarding debt obligations. In an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics  program, Akinyemi emphasized that Nigeria must be careful not only about its debt to China but also its commitments to other nations, including the U.S. and medium-power countries.

Akinyemi highlighted the risks of defaulting on international deals, referencing a recent situation where Nigerian sovereign assets were seized globally due to a Chinese company’s legal action. He cautioned that while China is an essential partner, it will prioritize its interests, and Nigeria must ensure it honors all agreements to safeguard its reputation and assets.

He also pointed out the growing economic rivalry between China and the U.S., stressing the need for Nigeria to display fiscal responsibility in repaying loans. Akinyemi’s comments followed Tinubu’s recent visit to China, where several bilateral deals were signed during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit.

This warning follows a French court ruling that authorized the seizure of Nigerian presidential jets in a dispute involving a Chinese company and the Ogun State government, sparking concerns about Nigeria’s international financial obligations.
