Peter Obi Denies Leaving Labour Party, Laments Nigeria’s Worsening State

Peter Obi, the Labour Party candidate in the 2023 presidential election, has dismissed rumors that he is planning to leave the party. During the ongoing National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, Obi reassured party members that he remains a committed member of the Labour Party.

“Some speculated that I have left the Labour Party, some have said others are on their way out. Let me assure you, we are Labour Party members,” Obi stated. “I have never discussed with any other party. If we are going to discuss with anybody, we will do so jointly from our house at the Labour Party. No party can claim that they have seen me discussing with them.”

The former governor of Anambra State emphasized that he had no intentions of leaving the party and assured that any decision regarding such matters would be made in consultation with Labour Party stakeholders.

Obi also used the occasion to express his concerns about the state of the nation, describing Nigeria as “collapsing” under the current circumstances. He pointed to worsening economic conditions, urging the opposition to speak out against bad governance.

“We must speak when things are wrong. Nigeria is collapsing, the numbers are clear, and the indices are clear. More and more people are becoming poorer. People who used to feed well are now begging, even in this hotel,” Obi lamented.

He shared a personal reflection on the economic challenges, highlighting the impact on the hospitality industry: “Where I used to go, people would ask, ‘Oga, will you eat? Will you drink?’ But now, nobody is asking me anything. That shows you how bad it is.”

Obi called for collective action, stating, “Let us acknowledge the challenges we face, stand together, and ensure that the right things are done, starting from our party.”
