Peter Obi Decries Leadership Failures Amid Rising Poverty and Crisis

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has voiced deep concerns over Nigeria’s political leadership, describing it as an “embarrassing spectacle” at a time when the nation is grappling with worsening poverty and crises.

In a post on X, Obi lamented that Nigeria faces unprecedented levels of multidimensional poverty, soaring infant mortality, insecurity, hunger, and a growing number of out-of-school children. He criticized the government for prioritizing trivial matters instead of tackling these urgent issues.

“Instead, the national discourse is consumed by trivialities whether it is allegations of sexual harassment or budget padding in the National Assembly, controversies over State House of Assembly speakership, or reckless court judgments threatening governance and stability,” he stated.

Obi accused the three arms of government Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary of engaging in political distractions rather than implementing critical reforms. He pointed to the Executive’s “negative display of power” in Osun State, the Judiciary’s controversial ruling on Rivers State, and the National Assembly’s scandals as evidence of leadership failure.

He urged political leaders to refrain from interfering in state governance, focus on strengthening democracy, and curb the practice of politicians defecting to parties for electoral advantage.

Describing the current state of governance as a betrayal of public trust, Obi warned that Nigeria cannot afford to be run like a “reality TV show” while millions suffer. He called for leadership founded on character, competence, compassion, and urgency, emphasizing that anything less would jeopardize the country’s future.
