Nnamdi Kanu Rejects Trial, Vows to Stay in Detention Until Given a Fair Judge

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has declared that he is willing to remain in detention indefinitely unless his case is heard by an impartial judge.

Kanu, facing terrorism-related charges before Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja Federal High Court, accused the Nigerian government of manipulating the judiciary to deny him a fair trial. Despite multiple court rulings in his favor, he claims the authorities are determined to keep him detained.

In an open letter, Kanu highlighted alleged “executive and judicial fraud” against him, referencing:

  • A 2017 Federal High Court ruling affirming IPOB’s legality, later overturned in an ex parte proceeding.
  • A2022 Federal High Court judgment declaring his extraordinary rendition and detention unconstitutional.
  • A 2022 Appeal Court ruling dismissing charges against him over his illegal extradition.
  • A 2023 Supreme Court decision that found his bail revocation unjust but still ordered a retrial.

Despite these rulings, Kanu remains in detention. He has refused to participate in proceedings under Justice Nyako, alleging bias due to corruption cases involving her family.

“If it will take the rest of my life in detention to produce me before a proper and impartial court, so be it,” he stated.

His trial has been indefinitely adjourned.
