Luigi Mangione traveled from Georgia with the alleged intent to stalk and kill UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, targeting the health care industry because “it checked every box,” according to a federal criminal complaint released Thursday. The complaint includes excerpts from a notebook authorities said Mangione used to document his plan in the weeks leading up to the high-profile crime.
Mangione now faces four federal charges, including stalking, a firearms offense involving a silencer, and murder through use of a firearm—a charge that could make him eligible for the death penalty.
The notebook, seized by police, reveals writings that prosecutors say expressed “hostility towards the health insurance industry and wealthy executives in particular.” The entries outlined a detailed plan leading to Thompson’s fatal shooting.
An entry dated August 15, 2024, states, “The details are finally coming together,” and continues, “I’m glad—in a way—that I’ve procrastinated, bc [because] it allowed me to learn more about [acronym for Company-1].”
A later entry from October 22, 2024, referenced an investor conference as a pivotal opportunity, stating, “1.5 months. This investor conference is a true windfall… and—most importantly—the message becomes self-evident.”
The same entry described plans to “wack” the CEO of one of the insurance companies during the event, federal authorities said.
The chilling details underscore the calculated nature of the crime, with prosecutors highlighting Mangione’s apparent fixation on targeting leaders in the health care sector. The federal charges follow Mangione’s earlier indictment in New York for first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism.
