Labour Party Rejects Merger, Open to Strategic Alliances – Spokesperson

The Labour Party (LP) has dismissed the possibility of a merger but remains open to strategic partnerships to enhance its chances in future elections, according to its spokesperson, Obiora Ifoh.

Ifoh’s clarification follows calls from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for a rebranding, merger, or coalition to reclaim the party and restore its ideological foundation.

In a communique issued after its weekend meeting, the NLC directed the party’s National Administrative Council (NAC) to take immediate steps to safeguard the interests of Nigerian workers.

“The congress will not allow the Labour Party to be hijacked by reactionary forces who do not represent the aspirations of the working people and broader Nigerian people,” the NLC stated.

However, in a statement on Monday, Ifoh reaffirmed that while the party is open to collaborations that could strengthen its electoral prospects, a complete merger is not on the table.

The Labour Party is currently facing internal leadership struggles, with different factions vying for control as it prepares for the next electoral cycle.
