FG Criticized for NYSC Allowance Delay as Corps Members Struggle Amid Rising Inflation

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has slammed the Federal Government for failing to implement the promised increase in National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members’ allowances, announced in September 2024.

The proposed policy, which would raise corps members’ stipends from N33,000 to N77,000, was initially welcomed as a solution to financial difficulties faced by NYSC members. However, four months later, the promise remains unfulfilled, leaving corps members burdened by inflation and unmet expectations.

In a statement, Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA’s National Coordinator, condemned the delay as “unjust and deceptive.” He stated, “The NYSC should represent transparency and fairness. Announcing an allowance increase only to abandon it undermines the government’s credibility and subjects thousands of young Nigerians to unnecessary hardship. This delay is a betrayal of trust.”

HURIWA emphasized that the NYSC allowance is vital for corps members dedicating a year to national service. It warned that failing to honor the pledge could damage the morale of Nigerian youths and the integrity of the NYSC scheme.

Meanwhile, at the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Abuja, five corps members received business grants totaling over N3.2 million. The grants, provided by Love Uloko, Founder of Activate Success International Foundation, were awarded to corps members with innovative business ideas in fashion, food, and horticulture.

Beneficiaries included Enwemeka Blessing (FC/24A/5897), Abdumalik Ibrahim (FC/24A/6157), Akande Olaitan Sunday (FC/24B/3856), Blessing Ijeoma Omachi (FC/24B/5031), and Emmanuel Ali (FC/24B/0603). The first three recipients were awarded N750,000 each, while the remaining two received N500,000 each.

Uloko highlighted the rigorous selection process and praised the recipients for their creativity and resilience. “As of today, we have supported 53 corps members through this initiative. We are investing in dreams, nurturing potential, and sowing seeds of success that will flourish for years to come,” she said.

She commended the NYSC Director General and management team for their collaboration, noting that Activate Success International Foundation has partnered with NYSC for over seven years to empower corps members to discover their talents and lead purposeful lives.

Through these initiatives, Uloko expressed her hope for a generation of self-reliant leaders contributing meaningfully to society.
