Deji Adeyanju Accuses Police of Targeting Sowore Over Criticism of IGP

Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has alleged that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is persecuting Omoyele Sowore, former African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, in retaliation for his criticism of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun.

Sowore was summoned to the police headquarters in Abuja on Monday to answer allegations of cyberstalking, negligent acts, and intimidation. The charges stem from a viral video showing Sowore confronting officers at a Lagos checkpoint after his vehicle was stopped.

Providing updates, Sowore disclosed that he rejected the bail conditions set by the police, which required him to surrender his international passport and secure a level 17 civil servant as a guarantor.

Adeyanju, one of Sowore’s lawyers, described the bail terms as “outrageous” and accused the police of intimidation. “Sowore has been vocal in labeling the IGP as illegal for overstaying his term. This seems like a calculated opportunity for the IGP to silence Sowore,” Adeyanju said during a media briefing.

He further criticized the police for what he called misplaced priorities. “Instead of focusing on critical policing issues, they are imposing excessive bail conditions and refusing to release him on self-recognition,” Adeyanju stated.

The case has drawn significant public attention, with many urging the police to ensure fairness and respect for Sowore’s rights.
