Nigeria and the United Kingdom have agreed to strengthen cooperation in tackling disinformation, fake news and the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammad, disclosed this following a meeting with the British High Commissioner, Peter Vowles, at his office in Abuja on Thursday.
In a post on his verified X account, the minister said discussions focused on the growing spread of fake news and misinformation and the challenges they pose to public understanding and confidence in the electoral process.
He stressed the importance of stronger partnerships with countries such as the UK to promote accurate information, responsible communication and public awareness.
Idris noted that tackling misinformation required collective efforts, given the growing influence of digital platforms and the speed at which unverified information spreads.
He added that cooperation with international partners would be crucial in promoting responsible information management, ensuring access to credible information and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.
The discussions also explored ways to strengthen UK-Nigeria relations through improved public communication and practical collaboration on emerging information-related challenges.
Vowles, who assumed office about eight weeks ago, said both countries stood to benefit from closer cooperation, identifying misinformation and the misuse of artificial intelligence as areas where they could develop common approaches.
