The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged the international community to defend Nigerians’ right to freely choose their leaders in the 2027 general elections.
Obi made the appeal on Thursday after meeting with the new British High Commissioner to Nigeria and his team at the commissioner’s residence in Abuja.
In a post on X, the former Anambra State governor said their discussions focused on governance, the welfare of Nigerians and the forthcoming elections.
He clarified that he was not seeking foreign support for any political party or candidate but wanted international partners to help protect the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.
“Our appeal to the international community is not for support for any particular candidate or political party. It is for something far more fundamental: the protection of the Nigerian people’s democratic right to freely choose their leaders through free, fair, transparent and credible elections,” he said.
Obi urged international partners to promote accountability and ensure that the wishes of voters were respected.
“The will of the people must prevail,” he added.
He also congratulated the British High Commissioner and the British people on the occasion of King Charles III’s birthday.
