Turaki-Led PDP Faction Vows to Contest 2027 Elections

The Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that it will fully participate in the 2027 general elections, insisting that the party’s ongoing leadership crisis will not prevent it from fielding candidates.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Thursday, the faction’s Interim National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki, said the PDP had survived similar internal disputes in the past and would overcome its current challenges.

According to him, the party’s present leadership crisis is not unprecedented, recalling the period that led to the inauguration of the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee.

“There may be challenges here and there regarding the leadership of our party. Again, for us in the PDP, this is nothing new. We will overcome. We shall overcome. We are overcoming,” Turaki said.

He alleged that many of the crises affecting opposition political parties in the country could be traced to the ruling party, describing the situation as unfortunate.

Despite the internal divisions, Turaki maintained that no individual or group could destroy the PDP.

“Nobody, and I dare say, nobody can kill the PDP. PDP will continue to live,” he declared.

The former Minister of Special Duties explained that the stakeholders’ meeting was convened to brief party leaders on recent developments, including the implications of a court judgment delivered in a suit filed by the party’s Board of Trustees.

He noted that the interim leadership had yet to issue an official position on the judgment because some of its officials were outside the country or away on official engagements when the ruling was delivered.

Turaki said the meeting also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to deliberate on strategies for repositioning the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Reaffirming his faction’s determination to contest the polls, he said the PDP would be on the ballot for every elective office.

“The essence of every political party is to legitimately capture power. You cannot capture power unless you are on the ballot. I want to tell you that this PDP shall be on the ballot for all rounds of the 2027 elections, from the presidential election down to the State Houses of Assembly elections,” he said.

Turaki commended party members for remaining loyal despite the challenges confronting the PDP and urged them to remain united, expressing confidence that the decisions reached at the meeting would strengthen the party and position it for victory in the 2027 elections.
