G7 Leaders Press Trump to Refocus on Ukraine as War Returns to Summit Agenda

Leaders of the Group of Seven nations sought on Tuesday to bring renewed attention to the war in Ukraine, urging President Donald Trump to maintain support for Kyiv and increase pressure on Russia as the conflict enters its fifth year.

The war, triggered by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, has recently been overshadowed by tensions in the Middle East and the conflict involving Iran. However, several G7 leaders used the summit to push Ukraine back to the forefront of international discussions.

French President Emmanuel Macron said he would seek to persuade Trump to continue backing Ukraine and strengthen efforts to pressure Russia toward a negotiated peace settlement.

As Washington has reduced military and financial assistance to Kyiv under the Trump administration, France and its European allies have emerged as Ukraine’s largest sources of support.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined G7 leaders for a working session focused on the conflict. The discussions, however, were relatively brief, lasting approximately 75 minutes, according to the French presidency.

The meeting came shortly after Trump announced an agreement aimed at ending the U.S. conflict with Iran, which has dominated international attention in recent months.

Speaking on Tuesday, Trump indicated that his focus was shifting back to Ukraine and confirmed plans to hold a one-on-one meeting with Zelenskyy during the summit.

“I want to focus on Ukraine now,” Trump said, suggesting that the Iran issue would soon be “back in the rearview mirror.”

While the president downplayed the direct impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on the United States, he expressed concern about the human cost of the conflict, highlighting the continuing loss of life on both sides.

The discussions underscored ongoing efforts by European leaders to keep international attention on Ukraine and secure continued support as the war shows little sign of ending despite repeated diplomatic initiatives.
