Commuters traveling through Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday are being advised to expect significant traffic disruptions as transportation operations for the World Cup match between France national football team and Senegal national football team ramp up ahead of kickoff at MetLife Stadium.
City officials warned that the combination of weekday rush-hour traffic, road closures, vehicle restrictions and thousands of fans traveling to New Jersey could cause substantial delays throughout the day.
As part of the transportation plan, West 42nd Street will be restricted to FIFA-authorized vehicles and fan shuttle buses from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Several streets east of Madison Square Garden will also be closed to accommodate hundreds of standby buses positioned to support event operations.
Officials said approximately 530 contracted buses will be staged near Penn Station and can be deployed if transportation disruptions occur or additional capacity is needed.
Fans attending the match are being encouraged to use NJ Transit, which authorities say remains the fastest and most reliable route to the stadium.
Beginning at 11 a.m., four hours before kickoff, World Cup ticket holders will be able to access a dedicated NJ Transit entrance at Penn Station via Sixth and Seventh avenues, helping streamline travel to the venue.
Transportation officials are urging commuters and travelers to allow extra time, use public transit where possible and stay informed about traffic and transit updates throughout the day.
