Taiwan Launches Website Seeking Intelligence Tips From Chinese Citizens

Taiwan has launched a new website aimed at encouraging Chinese citizens to share intelligence information, describing it as a secure platform for individuals dissatisfied with conditions in China and seeking change.

The initiative, unveiled on Sunday by Taiwan’s National Security Bureau, comes amid longstanding espionage tensions between Taiwan and China. Taiwan has reported a growing number of Chinese espionage cases in recent years as relations between the two sides remain strained.

In a statement published in both Chinese and English, the bureau said China’s economy has faced increasing challenges while political controls have become more restrictive.

“Coupled with a growing range of social and livelihood-related problems, these conditions have fuelled public discontent,” the statement said. “As a result, an increasing number of individuals have approached relevant agencies in Taiwan, wishing to provide various types of information.”

China’s Taiwan Affairs Office did not immediately comment on the move.

Visitors to the new website are greeted by a one-minute promotional video generated using artificial intelligence, according to the bureau. The video portrays a Chinese government employee watching colleagues being investigated and removed from their positions amid an atmosphere of uncertainty and political pressure.

In the video, the character remarks, “Ah, yet another person has been taken away,” while a narrator notes that longtime colleagues are disappearing without explanation. The clip concludes with the official purchasing a mobile phone and declaring, “Now is the time to change,” before using the website.

Although the platform is blocked within China, many Chinese internet users access restricted foreign websites through virtual private networks (VPNs).

Taiwan’s National Security Bureau urged Chinese nationals, both within China and abroad, to “actively provide information and make changes with courage.”

The agency said the initiative follows similar intelligence-gathering practices used by security organizations in countries including the United States, Britain and Israel.

According to the bureau, the new reporting channel is designed to broaden Taiwan’s intelligence-gathering capabilities by providing additional sources of information from within China.
