In what appears to be a significant shift in approach to tackling insecurity, Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has declared his willingness to engage bandits and kidnappers who are prepared to renounce violence and return to peaceful living.
The governor said his administration remains open to dialogue with individuals who genuinely abandon criminal activities, assuring them of rehabilitation and reintegration opportunities if they embrace peace.
Radda made the remarks during the commissioning and handover of 152 housing units to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Jibia Local Government Area, a project executed under the UNDP Northwest Prevention Facility Project with support from the Government of Germany and the Katsina State Government.
Addressing those involved in banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes, the governor urged them to surrender their weapons and return to their communities, stressing that lasting prosperity can only be achieved through peace.
“To our brothers and sisters in the bush and forests, to those who still raise weapons against innocent people, and to those engaged in banditry, kidnapping and violence, hear me clearly today: there is a better path. The doors for dialogue, repentance and reintegration remain open,” he said.
The governor assured repentant criminals that government support programmes and economic opportunities currently available to law-abiding citizens could also be extended to them if they genuinely abandon violence.
“Lay down your arms and return to your families and communities. The same houses, grants and opportunities being provided here today can be available to you tomorrow. Not through fear or bloodshed, but through peace, good governance and honest labour,” Radda stated.
He further urged them to prioritise the future of their families over criminal activities.
“Choose your children over your weapons. Choose prosperity over destruction. Choose life,” he added.
The remarks mark a notable departure from earlier hardline positions against negotiating with criminal groups, suggesting a more conciliatory approach aimed at encouraging defections from bandit networks.
Radda, however, maintained that his administration remains committed to lawful and practical measures in addressing the security challenges confronting the state.
He emphasised that sustainable peace is essential for economic recovery, community rebuilding and long-term development across Katsina State.
The governor also pledged continued support for programmes designed to restore stability in affected communities, assist victims of insecurity and facilitate the safe return of displaced residents to normal life.
