NBA superstar LeBron James announced Friday that he is joining the Philadelphia 76ers, bringing an end to months of speculation over where he would continue his Hall of Fame career.

The four-time NBA champion and four-time Most Valuable Player revealed the decision in a post on social media, saying he believes Philadelphia gives him another opportunity to compete for an NBA title.

“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time,” James wrote.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, citing James’ longtime agent Rich Paul, the 40-year-old agreed to a two-year, $8 million contract that includes a player option.

James’ decision concludes one of the most closely watched free agency storylines of the offseason, with several teams—including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors and Miami Heat—widely rumored to be potential destinations.

Reflecting on the decision-making process, James said he took time to carefully consider what motivates him at this stage of his career.

“The last few weeks have really been special. I’ve never been able to have no clue what to do and take real time to just think,” he wrote.

“This is my last decision. I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point?”

James also expressed gratitude to the cities and franchises that shaped his career, writing, “Thank you LA. Miami I’ll forever love and Northeast Ohio will always home!”

In Philadelphia, James joins an All-Star core featuring Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown and Tyrese Maxey as the 76ers seek to contend for an NBA championship.

James recently completed his 23rd NBA season and his eighth with the Los Angeles Lakers before it was announced in June that he would leave the franchise.

His announcement came just before the start of the NBA’s free agency period, traditionally one of the league’s busiest times for player movement.

The move also means James and his son, Bronny James, will no longer play for the same organization. Bronny, who was drafted by the Lakers in 2024, remains on the team’s roster, though his future with the franchise remains uncertain.

James is now set to begin his 24th NBA season in Philadelphia, adding another chapter to one of the most accomplished careers in basketball history.
