The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to conclude its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise for the 2027 general election today, bringing to an end a nationwide registration process that has lasted nearly a year.

The exercise, which was originally scheduled to end on July 11, was extended by two weeks to allow more eligible Nigerians to register and participate in the 2027 polls.

The CVR, which commenced in August 2025, was conducted in three phases. The first phase ended in December 2025, the second ran from January 2026, while the third and final phase began in April 2026.

Available data indicates that about 9,291,715 eligible voters may have been added to the national voter register during the three phases of the exercise.

According to the figures, 2,572,054 voters completed their registration during the first phase, while 3,748,704 were registered in the second phase. A further 2,970,957 registrations were recorded during the third phase based on the latest figures released by the commission.

However, the figures remain provisional pending INEC’s final verification.

The electoral commission is expected to conduct a data clean-up to eliminate cases of multiple registration before announcing the official number of newly registered voters.

Ahead of the deadline, INEC urged eligible Nigerians who were yet to register to take advantage of the remaining time, stressing that the registration window would close today without any further extension.

The commission also encouraged prospective voters to use its self-service CVR portal to complete the online component of the registration process or visit designated registration centres nationwide for physical enrolment and assistance.

The Continuous Voter Registration exercise forms part of INEC’s preparations for the 2027 general election, allowing eligible Nigerians to register for the first time or update their voter information ahead of the polls.
