PDP Faction Moves to Quash Jonathan Ticket Reports

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party loyal to Nyesom Wike has called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to publicly distance himself from reports linking him to the party’s 2027 presidential ticket.

The group, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, described reports of a planned convention to affirm Jonathan as the PDP presidential candidate as false, misleading, and capable of generating political tension.

According to the faction, the party had already concluded its presidential primaries in accordance with the Electoral Act, INEC guidelines, and the PDP constitution, with Sandy Onor reportedly emerging as the party’s candidate for the 2027 election.

The group insisted that no recognised organ of the party had approved any convention or meeting to endorse Jonathan.

“The attention of the Peoples Democratic Party has been drawn to misleading information and unfounded reports circulating in certain quarters regarding an alleged planned convention aimed at affirming former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as the presidential candidate of the PDP,” the statement read.

The faction urged party members and the public to disregard the reports, describing them as unauthorised efforts aimed at creating confusion within the political space.

It also appealed to Jonathan to openly reject the development in order to preserve his reputation and democratic credentials.

“In view of this development, we respectfully call on former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to publicly dissociate himself from this charade in order to protect the integrity of the democratic process and preserve the credibility he earned while serving the nation,” the statement added.

The faction further called on security agencies to investigate individuals behind the reports and take appropriate action against anyone allegedly attempting to destabilise the political environment.

However, a rival PDP faction led by Tanimu Turaki had earlier announced plans to ratify Jonathan’s nomination during a special convention scheduled to hold on Saturday in Abuja.

In a separate statement signed by Ini Ememobong on behalf of the faction’s Interim National Working Committee, the group insisted the convention would proceed despite alleged attempts to disrupt it.

“We reiterate that the special convention to ratify the presidential candidature of President Goodluck Jonathan will hold as scheduled on Saturday, 30th May, 2026, at A Class Event Centre, Wuse 2, Abuja, by 10 a.m.,” the statement said.

The faction maintained that all legal and security requirements for the event had been fulfilled and warned against any attempt to suppress opposition political activities.
