Bayelsa Launches First State-Backed Flight Operations

The Bayelsa State-owned Pioneer Airlines has commenced non-scheduled flight operations using an ATR 72-600 aircraft acquired by the state government and operated in partnership with a private airline.

The inaugural flight, which marked the official start of operations, was piloted by Captain M. Ibrahim with First Officer Joyce serving as co-pilot.

The aircraft departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at 11:00hrs and, after receiving clearance from air traffic control, became airborne at 11:10hrs en route to the Bayelsa International Airport.

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri was among those onboard the aircraft, alongside former House of Representatives member Hon. Gabriel Onyenwife, Special Adviser on Political Matters I High Chief Collins Cocodia, and five other aides.

Speaking after the flight, Governor Diri expressed confidence in the airline’s operational capacity, describing it as a step toward building a strong and mutually beneficial aviation partnership for the state.

He noted his optimism that the initiative would enhance connectivity and support economic activities within Bayelsa State and beyond.
