The national soccer team of Democratic Republic of the Congo has canceled a series of World Cup preparation events in Kinshasa because of the ongoing Ebola outbreak and will instead continue training in Belgium, a team spokesperson said.
The squad had originally planned to host an open training session for supporters as well as a ceremonial send-off event with Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi on Monday ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
However, the plans were changed after travel restrictions introduced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in response to the Ebola outbreak complicated the team’s travel logistics, the spokesperson told Reuters.
Under the CDC restrictions, non-U.S. passport holders who have recently traveled to Congo, Uganda or South Sudan within the previous 21 days are prohibited from entering the United States.
Officials said relocating preparations to Belgium was intended to ensure the team could continue its World Cup buildup without risking travel complications ahead of the tournament.
