Tobi Amusan has won Nigeria’s first gold medal at the ongoing African Athletics Championships in Ghana after emerging victorious in the women’s 100m hurdles final on Wednesday.
Fellow Nigerian athlete Adaobi Tabugbo finished third to claim bronze, while Ashley Miller secured second place to prevent a Nigerian one-two finish in the event.
Official race times were not immediately released due to multiple technical issues that reportedly affected the competition.
Organisers were said to have battled faulty timing systems, missing live results, incomplete reports, and inconsistent disqualifications — problems that attracted criticism from athletes and fans.
Despite the disruptions, Amusan had already established herself as the clear favourite after recording the fastest times in both the heats and semi-finals.
The victory increased Nigeria’s medal tally to four ahead of the men’s and women’s 100m finals scheduled for later on Wednesday.
Nigeria had earlier won two medals on Tuesday at the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships:
· Divine Oladipo claimed silver in the women’s discus event
· Obiageri Amaechi won bronze
Oladipo’s performance marked her first international appearance for Nigeria after switching her sporting allegiance from United Kingdom.
