Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has officially joined the Accord Party, putting an end to weeks of speculation about his political direction ahead of the 2026 governorship election.
The governor confirmed his new political platform on Tuesday, days after formally resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the party under which he served as Senator for Osun West and later became governor.
Adeleke’s departure from the PDP followed mounting internal disputes within the party’s national leadership, which he said made it difficult for him to continue his political journey within the platform. In a resignation letter addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 2, Sagba Abogunde, in Ede North Local Government Area, Adeleke announced that his withdrawal from the party took effect on November 4, 2025.
“Due to the current crisis within the national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership of the People’s Democratic Party with immediate effect,” the letter stated.
Adeleke expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities it provided him, acknowledging its role in his rise from senator to governor.
He later confirmed his move in a detailed statement on his X handle, where he explained why he chose the Accord Party as his new political home. According to him, he had joined the party since November 6, 2025, after weeks of consultations with stakeholders and opinion leaders.
He said:
“Today, we unveiled the Accord Party, our new platform for the good people of Osun State… We intend to pursue a second term in office on the platform of the Accord Party to complete ongoing delivery of good governance and democratic dividends.”
Adeleke added that the Accord Party’s philosophy of welfarism aligned with his administration’s focus on citizens’ and workers’ welfare. He described the party as a united platform committed to inclusive leadership and good governance.
The Accord Party leadership has enthusiastically welcomed Adeleke, describing his entry as a major boost ahead of the 2026 election. His defection is expected to reshuffle political alignments in Osun State, with several loyalists reportedly preparing to follow him into the party.
While some within the PDP described his exit as a significant setback, others said the party’s escalating national crisis made the development unavoidable.
