Ted Cruz Renews Push for Sanctions on Nigerian Officials Over Religious Persecution

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz has renewed his call for Congress to take action against Nigerian officials accused of involvement in religious persecution, urging lawmakers to advance his proposed Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act.

In a post on his official X account, the Texas Republican wrote:
“Enough is enough. Congress should move my Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act to push back against the Nigerian officials behind these atrocities.”

The legislation, which Cruz has introduced in previous congressional sessions, seeks to impose targeted sanctions on individuals and organisations found responsible for violations of religious freedom in Nigeria.

Cruz’s renewed appeal follows rising concern among U.S. lawmakers, advocacy groups, and international observers over persistent attacks on religious communities and what critics describe as government inaction in curbing sectarian violence.

The senator’s statement underscores Washington’s growing scrutiny of Nigeria’s human rights record and could add pressure on the Biden administration to re-evaluate its diplomatic approach to Africa’s most populous nation.
