El-Rufai Regrets Role in APC’s Rise, Vows to Help Oust Tinubu in 2027

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, says he feels personally responsible for Nigeria’s current struggles and has committed himself to helping remove the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

In a candid interview on Arise TV on Monday, El-Rufai described President Bola Tinubu’s administration as a “failure” and an “existential threat” to the country, admitting he regrets playing a role in bringing the APC to power in 2015.

“Having contributed to bringing about this tragedy to Nigeria, I feel I must contribute to correcting it. I have no personal ambition. I am 65. I should be retired. But I want to ensure we remove this evil before it destroys Nigeria,” he declared.

El-Rufai emphasized that he is not seeking political office, but is actively working behind the scenes with key figures including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi to build a formidable opposition coalition. He disclosed that the group is weighing options between forming a new party or adopting an existing platform for the 2027 contest.

The former governor also accused the APC and the Tinubu-led government of sponsoring internal crises within opposition parties to weaken them.

“What the government and the ruling party have been doing is creating problems in the opposition parties by recruiting and financing viruses to multiply. This is what is happening in the Labour Party, the PDP, and even the NNPP,” he alleged.

El-Rufai did not hold back in his assessment of Tinubu’s political prospects:

“Tinubu will be lucky to come third in the 2027 election. Nigerians are fed up and looking for a credible alternative.”

His remarks underscore a deepening internal revolt within the APC’s founding ranks, while also signaling major political realignments ahead of the next presidential election.
