The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has blamed the recent stampedes that resulted in over 67 fatalities on the “misery, poverty, and hunger” afflicting Nigerians under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
On Wednesday, over 35 people, mostly children, lost their lives during a stampede at a funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State. Similar tragedies occurred on Saturday during palliative distributions in Ojika, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, and Maitama, Abuja, where 22 and 10 people died, respectively.
In a statement on Sunday, PDP spokesperson Debo Ologunagba described these incidents as a painful reflection of the country’s economic hardships.
“These widespread food stampedes are an ugly testament to the alarming level of misery, poverty, hunger, and desperation plaguing Nigerians under the overtly insensitive and rudderless Tinubu-led government,” Ologunagba said.
The PDP criticized the federal government’s perceived failure to implement effective intervention programs, accusing it of indifference to the suffering of Nigerians.
“It is heartbreaking that despite Nigeria’s abundant resources, citizens are dying in their struggle for food,” the statement continued.
The opposition party called for an immediate review of economic and tax policies, which it termed “suffocating,” and held the government accountable for the underlying causes of these tragedies.
“For the umpteenth time, the PDP demands the immediate review of all suffocating economic and tax policies of the APC administration, which are bringing misery and death to Nigerians daily,” Ologunagba stated.
The PDP expressed condolences to the families of the victims and to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, commending his swift response to the Ibadan incident.
