Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara has announced the transformation of the Specialist Hospital in Gusau into a University Teaching Hospital.
This initiative aims to elevate the status of the hospital to support the Zamfara University’s medical education and improve healthcare services in the state.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Suleiman Idris, on Friday, Governor Lawal emphasized the importance of this upgrade during the inauguration ceremony of the facility’s remodeling project, named ‘Ahmed Sani Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital.’
Lawal highlighted the benefits of this transformation, stating that it would enhance the referral system for specialized care, increase the healthcare workforce, and improve service quality, ultimately leading to better health outcomes.
“We are here today to flag off the remodeling, upgrading, and equipping of Ahmad Sani Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital, Gusau,” he said, adding that the project includes acquiring advanced medical equipment for the hospital.
The governor explained that the project is a response to the critical challenges his administration inherited in the healthcare sector. “The hospital is in a dire state despite its vital role in providing quality healthcare services to residents and visitors alike,” Lawal stated. He noted that many hospital structures are in disrepair and that the facility lacks adequate laboratory facilities, which hampers essential diagnostic procedures.
The project, according to Lawal, aims to safeguard the health and well-being of residents and healthcare providers, and to manage and control both communicable and non-communicable diseases proactively. The comprehensive healthcare approach will include:
– Provision of essential medicines
– Preventive measures
– Repositioning of health policies
– Implementation of protocols on water sanitation and hygiene standards
– Treatment of health conditions
– Immunization programs
– Comprehensive antenatal services
– Related nutrition interventions
– Strengthening of healthcare financing through a contributory model
The components of the remodelling project will involve new constructions, expansions, and upgrades of existing structures. This includes the completion of Doctors’ Quarters, modern laboratory imaging facilities, and a complete Hospital Information Management System, among others.
Governor Lawal’s initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to improving the healthcare infrastructure in Zamfara, addressing the immediate needs of the health sector, and ensuring the provision of high-quality healthcare services to the people of the state.
