Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced movie mogul, has been hospitalized shortly after his 2020 rape conviction in New York was overturned, as confirmed by his lawyer, Arthur Aidala.
According to Aidala, Weinstein was transferred to a Manhattan hospital on Friday due to significant health concerns. Despite the overturning of his New York conviction, Weinstein remains incarcerated following a separate rape conviction in Los Angeles.
Describing his client’s health as “somewhat of a train wreck,” Aidala expressed concerns about Weinstein’s physical well-being, stating, “It seems like he needs a lot of help, physically. He’s got a lot of problems.”
In a subsequent statement provided to CBS, the BBC’s US partner, Aidala disclosed that Weinstein was hospitalized after the New York City Department of Correction determined that he required “immediate medical attention.”
“A myriad of tests are being performed on Harvey and he is being kept for observation,” Aidala added.
A spokesperson from the corrections department confirmed that Weinstein is currently in custody at Bellevue Hospital.
On Friday, Harvey Weinstein was transferred from the Mohawk Correctional Facility, where he had been held since 2023, to the Rikers Island jail complex.
Weinstein’s legal team has previously highlighted his ongoing health issues, which include diabetes, sleep apnea, and heart and vision problems. In 2020, he was hospitalized for five days due to persistent heart problems and chest pains.
According to Arthur Aidala, Weinstein’s lawyer, he is set to meet with Weinstein on Monday before his court appearance scheduled for Wednesday, as reported by the Associated Press.
Earlier in the week, the New York Court of Appeals overturned Weinstein’s conviction, citing concerns about a fair trial. The court determined that prosecutors had introduced witnesses whose allegations were not related to the charges against Weinstein, unfairly tainting the proceedings. Consequently, a new trial was ordered.
During his 2020 trial, Weinstein was found guilty of sexually assaulting former production assistant Mimi Haleyi in 2006 and raping Jessica Mann, a former aspiring actress, in 2013. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison.
Weinstein’s defense team argued that the encounters between him and the accusers were consensual.
In addition to his conviction in New York, Harvey Weinstein was sentenced in California last year to 16 years in prison for raping an Italian model and actress at a Beverly Hills hotel in 2013.
