Senate Confirms Six Nominee To Serve As National Commissioners For NEC, REC

The Senate confirmed the nomination of six persons to serve as National Commissioners for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday.

Also, the nomination of one person as a Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for the electoral umpire was confirmed.

The confirmation followed President Muhammadu Buhari’s nomination of the persons, who sent their names to the National Assembly for approval in a letter dated December 10, 2021.

The confirmed nominees are as follows:

Mal. Mohammed Haruna, National Commissioner (Niger – North Central)

Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu (Delta – South-South)

Ukeagu Kenneth Nnamdi (Abia – South East)

Major General A. B. Alkali (rtd) – Adamawa, (North East).

Others are Engr. (Prof.) Rhoda H. Gumus (Bayelsa – South-South), and Mr. Sam Olumekan (Ondo – South West).

Olaniyi Olaleye Ijalaye (Ondo – South West), was confirmed as a Resident Electoral Commissioner.

The confirmations came after the Senate Committee on INEC, led by Senator Kabiru Gaya, presented its report.

Senator Gaya stated in his report that all of the nominees are non-card-carrying members of any political party in the nation and have been judged worthy of appointment by the committee.

In his remarks, Senate President Ahmad Lawan urged the confirmed nominees to view their appointment as a call to service, especially as Nigeria’s national elections in 2023 are approaching.
