Nigeria’s Flamingos have won their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title after defeating Japan 2-1 in Saturday’s final at the Stade de Marrakech, Morocco.
The victory also made Nigeria the first African country to win the tournament since its inception in 2008, with goals from Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku securing the historic triumph.
Bashiru opened the scoring in the 39th minute, converting a pass from Mary Dunstan. Her effort slipped through the hands of Japan goalkeeper Kou Kadowaki to give Nigeria a 1-0 lead at half-time.
The Flamingos doubled their advantage two minutes into the second half when Umejiaku scored in the 47th minute.
Esther Stephen provided the assist with a long pass, which Umejiaku controlled with her left foot before lifting the ball over the advancing goalkeeper.
Japan reduced the deficit in the 80th minute through Fuki Ito, who converted a pass from Anri Ito to make it 2-1.
The goal set up a tense finish as Japan pushed for an equaliser, but Nigeria held on to secure the title.
Kanyinsola Yusuf was booked in the 83rd minute, while both teams continued to create chances. Umejiaku and Yusuf threatened for Nigeria, while Mashiro Yamaji had a late opportunity for Japan.
Umejiaku was flagged offside in the 94th minute before the referee ended the contest after five minutes of added time.
