U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced Saturday the appointment of Richard Grenell, his former intelligence chief and a loyal ally, as the presidential envoy for special missions. Grenell will take charge of U.S. engagement in some of the world’s most contentious regions, including North Korea, Venezuela, and the Balkans.

“Ric will work in some of the hottest spots around the world, including Venezuela and North Korea,” Trump announced on his Truth Social platform, though specifics about Grenell’s mandate were not disclosed.

Grenell, a seasoned diplomat, held several key positions during Trump’s first term, including U.S. ambassador to Germany, acting director of national intelligence, and special envoy for Serbia-Kosovo peace negotiations. Known for his direct and hardline approach, Grenell became one of Trump’s most trusted foreign policy advisers.

Although Grenell was rumored to be a contender for secretary of state, the position ultimately went to Senator Marco Rubio. Grenell was also reportedly considered for the role of special envoy for the Ukraine conflict, a post filled by retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg.

As presidential envoy, Grenell’s assignments are expected to include:

  • North Korea: Trump aims to re-establish direct dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, revisiting the engagement strategy of his first term. This marks a departure from the Biden administration’s largely hands-off approach. However, North Korea’s advancing missile programs and closer alignment with Russia present new challenges to diplomacy.
  • Venezuela: Grenell will likely address the ongoing political and economic crisis, including strained U.S. relations and efforts to counter Russian and Chinese influence in the region.

Grenell’s appointment reflects Trump’s emphasis on a results-oriented foreign policy, underscoring his willingness to re-engage with adversaries while pursuing bold strategies in global hotspots.
